The Real Cost of Replacing Nonstick Pans Every Few Years

A quality nonstick pan — a T-fal or Calphalon — costs $30 to $80 and has a useful life of two to five years before the coating begins visibly degrading. Once a nonstick coating starts peeling, scratching, or flaking, the pan should be replaced. Over a 30-year cooking life, a household might purchase six to fifteen nonstick pans.

Each one goes to landfill. The PTFE or ceramic coating can’t be separated from the aluminum or steel base for recycling in most municipal programs. The pan body might be recyclable as scrap metal, but in practice, most nonstick pans are simply thrown away.

A cast iron pan purchased once — even a $30 Lodge — can last a lifetime and then some. The math doesn’t need dressing up.
